CW599 ORIGINAL OPERATING WORKFLOW

K2CW Operating Guide

Elecraft still offers the K2 kit. This guide covers the K2 operating controls after assembly and alignment, with options identified explicitly; it does not treat retired K2/100 upgrade hardware as a currently available base configuration.

English Owner’s Manual Rev I (29 March 2012), for serial numbers 4060 and above with Revision B PCB; errata I-8 (13 June 2018). Checked 2026-09-25. Applies after kit assembly and alignment, using original firmware; older hardware and fitted options need their own documentation. References use printed page numbers. The errata covers construction changes, not a new CW operating menu.

A five-step CW setup routine

Use this order as an operating checklist, not as a replacement for the radio manual. Controls and available options can vary by firmware and region.

01

Connect and select

Use a stereo KEY plug and set INP correctly.

02

Check the test setup

Hold VOX until TEST appears and C flashes.

03

Set rhythm and tone

Set KEYER speed, ST L and ST P.

04

Tune one signal

Use SPOT and then XFIL to isolate the desired note.

05

Send and listen

Return to OPER only after checking frequency, antenna and output power.

MODEL SETTINGS INDEX

CW settings, paths, and starting points

Tap MENU and turn VFO to select an entry, hold EDIT to change its value, then tap MENU to leave editing and again to exit. Search settings or paths below. Manufacturer recommendations and CW599 advice are labeled; examples are not defaults.

Keyer

Use a stereo KEY plug

Access path
MENU > INP
Options or range
HAND / PDLn / PDLr
Factory value / operating start
CW599: check each contact in TEST; the tone should stop when released.

CW599 note: A hand key or external keyer uses HAND and the tip contact. Use a stereo plug even for a hand key; the ring is a paddle contact and must not be accidentally grounded. For paddles, PDLn uses tip for dots and ring for dashes; PDLr reverses them.

Keyer

Enter TEST before practice

Access path
Hold VOX > TEST
Options or range
TEST / OPER
Factory value / operating start
CW599: use TEST before key adjustments and message rehearsal.

CW599 note: Confirm TEST and the flashing C mode letter before adjusting a key. Hold VOX again only when ready to return to normal operation.

Manual reference: K2 Owner’s Manual Rev I, p. 100

Keyer

Set the internal keyer speed

Access path
KEYER
Options or range
Approximately 9–50 WPM
Factory value / operating start
CW599: use a speed you can comfortably copy and send.

CW599 note: Turn KEYER and send a short word in TEST. Read the WPM display and keep clear spaces before deciding to increase speed.

Manual reference: K2 Owner’s Manual Rev I, pp. 47, 100

Keyer

Choose the squeeze-key response

Access path
MENU > IAB
Options or range
A / B
Factory value / operating start
Manufacturer recommendation: start with A if unsure; its release timing is less critical. This is not a stated default.

CW599 note: Use the iambic mode familiar from your other keyer. Test a squeeze-and-release sequence; extra final elements usually indicate a mode or release-timing mismatch.

Manual reference: K2 Owner’s Manual Rev I, p. 100

Receive

Set level separately from pitch

Access path
MENU > ST L / ST P
Options or range
ST L: 0–255; ST P: 400–800 Hz in 10 Hz steps
Factory value / operating start
Manufacturer recommendation: 500–600 Hz. CW599: moderate volume. Neither is a stated default.

CW599 note: Adjust in TEST; AF GAIN does not set sidetone volume. Changing ST P also changes the CW receive offset; check the received note after leaving the menu. The crystal-filter BFO positions are not automatically optimized: if the signal weakens after a pitch change, follow the CAL FIL alignment procedure rather than guessing values.

Manual reference: K2 Owner’s Manual Rev I, pp. 47, 77, 89, 100–101

Receive

Work through fitted filters

Access path
XFIL; AFIL
Options or range
FL1–FL4; AFIL requires KAF2 / KDSP2
Factory value / operating start
CW599: tune first, then narrow in stages while checking readability.

CW599 note: Begin with a wider XFIL choice and narrow after tuning. AFIL requires its option; do not assume an uninstalled module is a hidden software setting. Hold XFIL + AGC together to inspect the filter number and bandwidth; alignment/customization changes the actual presets.

Manual reference: K2 Owner’s Manual Rev I, pp. 94, 100

Receive

Match SPOT before trying CW reverse

Access path
Hold SPOT; hold CW RV
Options or range
Pitch matching; CW Normal / Reverse
Factory value / operating start
CW599: turn off RIT, XIT and SPLIT for a normal same-frequency contact.

CW599 note: Hold SPOT and tune the VFO until the received note matches the reference; tap a switch to end it. Then hold CW RV to try the opposite sideband against interference; a bar above C indicates reverse. Compare the wanted signal and interferer. A large pitch jump calls for another SPOT check. SPOT does not display received text.

Break-in

Adjust key-up recovery

Access path
MENU > T-R
Options or range
0.00–2.55 seconds
Factory value / operating start
Manufacturer casual-operation suggestion: about 0.05 s, not a default. The menu table specifies 2.55 s; the CW narrative rounds this to 2.5 s.

CW599 note: Try a short delay for relaxed operating, then compare faster recovery while listening with your normal headphones. A zero setting is the fastest, not an accuracy setting for Morse timing.

Manual reference: K2 Owner’s Manual Rev I, pp. 89, 100

Memory / PC

Rehearse message buffers

Access path
Hold REC > 0–8; MSG ends recording; MSG > 0–8 plays
Options or range
Nine buffers (0–8), 250 bytes each
Factory value / operating start
CW599: record a short call, then rehearse playback and stopping in TEST.

CW599 note: Recording requires a paddle plugged directly into the K2 and INP set to PDLn/PDLr. Hold REC, tap a buffer number, send the message, then tap MSG to finish. Tapping MSG before sending preserves the old contents. Tap MSG then tap the number for one playback; MSG or a paddle tap cancels it. Verify callsign and spacing before returning to OPER.

Manual reference: K2 Owner’s Manual Rev I, p. 101

Memory / PC

Leave a reply gap in repeated calls

Access path
MENU > RPT; tap MSG, then hold 0–8
Options or range
0–255 seconds; hold the buffer number to repeat
Factory value / operating start
CW599: allow time for a reply and rehearse stopping in TEST.

CW599 note: RPT sets the pause between messages. The buffer number flashes at the end of each repeated transmission; MSG or the key/paddle stops it. A tap selects one playback; a hold selects repeat. FPLY is a separate shortcut: enabling it takes over the selected buttons’ tap functions in CW mode.

CW599 RECOMMENDATIONS

Three operating starting points

These are original operator-oriented starting points. They are not factory presets and intentionally avoid claiming model-specific default values.

First contact

Check one change at a time.

  • Keying: Match the actual key and verify clean spacing
  • Transmit: Check the documented RF-off or dummy-load setup first
  • Receive: Use a comfortable tone and moderate volume

Difficult reception

Keep the wanted signal audible.

  • Tuning: Center the wanted note before narrowing
  • Filter: Compare changes at a similar audio level
  • Copying: Ask for a repeat when a callsign remains uncertain

Repeated calls

Leave a clear path back to receiving.

  • Sending: Verify any supported message and its stop action
  • Listening: Leave time for an answer
  • Station: Confirm frequency, power and transmit recovery

Questions and troubleshooting

Does it decode received CW?

The checked documentation does not provide a built-in received-CW text workflow for K2. SPOT is a pitch-matching aid, not a text decoder.

Why does AFIL do nothing?

The audio filter requires its optional module. Check fitted hardware before troubleshooting a menu.

Why does a hand-key cable cause continuous keying?

Check the required stereo plug and INP HAND configuration; an unintended ring-to-ground connection can trigger the paddle input.
