IC-7100CW Operating Guide

The separated controller and main unit have different key sockets. This guide keeps their roles distinct and covers the memory keyer, side tone and break-in before moving from HF to higher bands.

START HERE

A five-step CW setup routine

Use this order as an operating checklist, not as a replacement for the radio manual. Controls and available options can vary by firmware and region.

01

Connect and select

Connect the correct key socket and select CW.

02

Check the test setup

Keep break-in OFF and confirm side tone without RF.

03

Set rhythm and tone

Set key speed, pitch, side-tone level and polarity.

04

Tune one signal

Tune the wanted signal by ear before reducing receive bandwidth.

05

Send and listen

Check transmit frequency and power; enable BKIN and send one short call.

MODEL SETTINGS INDEX

CW settings, paths, and starting points

Search by setting or menu path. Manufacturer defaults and recommendations are labeled separately from CW599 advice; references identify the checked manual or software version.

Keyer

Match the key and socket

Access path
MENU > M-2 > KEYER > MENU > SET > Keyer Type
Options or range
Straight key / BUG-KEY / ELEC-KEY
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: ELEC-KEY.

CW599 note: Set the controller ELEC-KEY jack for your paddle. The separate main-unit KEY jack remains direct keying regardless of this setting. Test individual contacts with break-in off before transmitting.

Manual reference: IC-7100 Full Manual, pp. 4-10–4-11

Keyer

Adjust speed without changing frequency

Access path
SPEED/PITCH > M-CH / BANK
Options or range
6–48 WPM
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: Select CW before opening the speed control. Send a short callsign with break-in off; use a speed with clean gaps and verify it again after using an external keyer, whose speed is set separately.

Manual reference: IC-7100 Full Manual, pp. 4-3–4-5, 6-3–6-4

Receive

Match the wanted audio pitch

Access path
SPEED/PITCH > M-CH / BANK
Options or range
300–900 Hz
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: Choose a comfortable sidetone, then tune the received note to match it. Pitch changes the listening reference; it does not retune a split transmit VFO to the other station automatically.

Manual reference: IC-7100 Full Manual, pp. 4-3–4-5, 6-3–6-4

Receive

Set side tone at a modest level

Access path
MENU > M-2 > KEYER > MENU > SET > Side Tone Level
Options or range
0–100%
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: 50%.

CW599 note: Keep break-in off and listen while keying. Adjust this level rather than increasing overall receiver gain; verify that the note stays comfortable when headphones replace the speaker.

Manual reference: IC-7100 Full Manual, pp. 4-10–4-11

Keyer

Correct a reversed paddle

Access path
MENU > M-2 > KEYER > MENU > SET > Paddle Polarity
Options or range
Normal / Reverse
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: Normal.

CW599 note: Use this when dot and dash are opposite to your usual hand motion. Test each side separately and a short alternating sequence; do not change keyer type just to swap contacts.

Manual reference: IC-7100 Full Manual, pp. 4-10–4-11

Break-in

Separate practice, semi and full break-in

Access path
MENU > M-3 > BK-IN
Options or range
OFF / BKIN / F-BKIN; hold for delay
Factory value / operating start
CW599: prove OFF practice, then try semi break-in.

CW599 note: OFF with the radio in receive permits side-tone practice. Start on air with BKIN and a comfortable receive delay; use F-BKIN only after confirming the complete station can switch between elements.

Manual reference: IC-7100 Full Manual, pp. 4-3–4-5, 6-3–6-4

Keyer

Preserve ordinary Morse timing

Access path
MENU > M-2 > KEYER > MENU > SET > Dot/Dash Ratio
Options or range
1:1:2.8–1:1:4.5
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: 1:1:3.0.

CW599 note: Keep the documented ratio initially. If a correspondent reports unusual spacing, first check speed and your release timing; changing dash ratio does not repair missing character gaps.

Manual reference: IC-7100 Full Manual, pp. 4-10–4-11

Break-in

Avoid unnecessarily sharp edges

Access path
MENU > M-2 > KEYER > MENU > SET > Rise Time
Options or range
2 / 4 / 6 / 8 ms
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: 4 ms.

CW599 note: Retain the documented starting value while setting up the station. Judge changes with a separate receiver or a reliable on-air report; a sharper local sidetone does not establish cleaner transmitted keying.

Manual reference: IC-7100 Full Manual, pp. 4-10–4-11

Memory / PC

Replace examples before memory sending

Access path
M-2 > KEYER > EDIT / SEND
Options or range
4 memories; 70 characters each
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: Enter your own callsign and a short exchange. Play once with break-in off to check every character; only then enable transmit, and test stopping playback before using repetition.

Manual reference: IC-7100 Full Manual, pp. 4-7–4-8

Memory / PC

Set the reply gap deliberately

Access path
MENU > M-2 > KEYER > MENU > SET > Keyer Repeat Time
Options or range
1–60 seconds
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: 2 seconds; CW599: allow a comfortable listening gap.

CW599 note: The repeat timer controls the gap, not a promise that the channel is free. Use one-shot CQ first, then choose a gap that gives you enough time to hear a weak reply.

Manual reference: IC-7100 Full Manual, pp. 4-10–4-11

CW599 RECOMMENDATIONS

Three operating starting points

These are original operator-oriented starting points. They are not factory presets and intentionally avoid claiming model-specific default values.

First contact

Check one change at a time.

  • Keying: Match the actual key and verify clean spacing
  • Transmit: Check the documented RF-off or dummy-load setup first
  • Receive: Use a comfortable tone and moderate volume

Difficult reception

Keep the wanted signal audible.

  • Tuning: Center the wanted note before narrowing
  • Filter: Compare changes at a similar audio level
  • Copying: Ask for a repeat when a callsign remains uncertain

Repeated calls

Leave a clear path back to receiving.

  • Sending: Verify any supported message and its stop action
  • Listening: Leave time for an answer
  • Station: Confirm frequency, power and transmit recovery

Questions and troubleshooting

Does it decode received CW?

The checked documentation does not provide a built-in received-CW text workflow for IC-7100. CW auto tuning and RTTY text decoding do not imply received-CW text decoding.

Why can I hear my key but cannot transmit?

Break-in OFF in receive is the expected practice state. Confirm the station connections before selecting BKIN.

Why is a different frequency used for transmit?

Check split, RIT/XIT and the active transmit VFO or band. Restore a deliberate simplex setup before an ordinary contact.
