TX-500CW Operating Guide

TX-500 uses a compact field layout; the base transceiver has no built-in tuner. Receive text, TX echo and recorded messages are separate functions.

A five-step CW setup routine

Use this order as an operating checklist, not as a replacement for the radio manual. Controls and available options can vary by firmware and region.

01

Connect and select

Connect the correct key adapter and select CW/CWR.

02

Check the test setup

Enable MON, disable VOX and check the key without RF.

03

Set rhythm and tone

Set CW KEY, CW SPEED and CW PITCH.

04

Tune one signal

Match the tone indicator and enable decoder RX if desired.

05

Send and listen

Check antenna and power, enable CW VOX and send once.

RECEIVE ASSISTANCE

CW decoding: enable, tune and recover

The radio has separate RX and TX CW text switches. Menu wording varies between manual and firmware revisions; use CW DECOD/CW DECODE by name.

01

Enable RX

Open the CW decoder menu, choose RX with SubMenu and set ENABLE.

02

Match the tone

Tune until the CW tone-match indicator agrees with your CW PITCH.

03

Isolate one signal

Use an appropriate receive filter and moderate gain; compare audibility before and after narrowing.

04

Read the lower line

Return to the main display and compare decoded text with the heard callsign; TX text is a separate option.

When decoding needs help

No text

Return to the receive-decode setting above, confirm a steady audible CW signal and retune before changing more parameters. Transmit echo alone does not confirm receive decoding.

Garbled text

Listen to one complete call and compare it with the display. Fading and irregular spacing can defeat the decoder; request a repeat and copy by ear instead of completing an uncertain callsign from guesses.

Another station takes over

Center the wanted signal first, then narrow the receive filter gradually. If the wanted tone disappears, widen the filter and tune again. Stop adjusting when a clear tone and stable text agree.

MODEL SETTINGS INDEX

CW settings, paths, and starting points

Search by setting or menu path. Manufacturer defaults and recommendations are labeled separately from CW599 advice; references identify the checked manual or software version.

Keyer

Select the key type and iambic response

Access path
MENU > CW KEY > TYPE / AUTO / REV
Options or range
SINGLE / AUTO; IAMBIC A/B; reverse
Factory value / operating start
Manual defaults: AUTO, IAMBIC A, reverse disabled.

CW599 note: Use SINGLE for direct keying or AUTO for a paddle. Verify the connector adapter and each contact with MON on and VOX off before an expedition.

Manual reference: TX-500 User Manual, pp. 17, 21–22, 29–30

Keyer

Read the speed unit before adjusting

Access path
MENU > CW SPEED
Options or range
10–300 CPM / 2–60 WPM
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: 100 CPM / 20 WPM.

CW599 note: Read the unit shown by the radio and send a known short phrase. Do not treat characters per minute as words per minute; verify the actual cadence by ear before storing a message.

Manual reference: TX-500 User Manual, pp. 17, 21–22, 29–30

Receive

Align the CW tone and receiver center

Access path
MENU > CW PITCH
Options or range
400–1200 Hz
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: 700 Hz.

CW599 note: Choose a comfortable pitch, then tune the incoming signal until the CW tone-match indicator agrees. This is the essential first check when receive text is blank or unstable.

Manual reference: TX-500 User Manual, pp. 17, 21–22, 29–30

Keyer

Keep practice off air

Access path
MON on; VOX off
Options or range
Sidetone without automatic key-triggered RF
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: Enable MON and disable VOX before key practice. Confirm no RF output and keep PTT released; switch VOX on only after checking the band, antenna and output power.

Manual reference: TX-500 User Manual, pp. 17, 21–22, 29–30

Break-in

Set the CW VOX delay

Access path
MENU > VOX DELAY > CW
Options or range
100–10000 ms, 100 ms steps
Factory value / operating start
Manual CW default: 400 ms.

CW599 note: Use the CW subsetting, not MIC or DIG. Increase delay if switching between elements is distracting; confirm reception returns promptly enough to hear the other station’s break.

Manual reference: TX-500 User Manual, pp. 17, 21–22, 29–30

Keyer

Keep the ordinary dot/dash ratio

Access path
MENU > CW WEIGHT
Options or range
2:1–4.5:1
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: 3:1.

CW599 note: Start with the documented ratio and make a short timing check. Irregular character gaps should be corrected at the paddle before experimenting with dash length.

Manual reference: TX-500 User Manual, pp. 17, 21–22, 29–30

Receive

Enable RX independently of TX text

Access path
MENU > CW DECOD / CW DECODE > RX
Options or range
ENABLE / DISABLE; separate TX setting
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: DISABLE.

CW599 note: Select RX with the SubMenu key, then ENABLE. Return to the main screen to see characters in the lower line. TX enable alone displays your sending and cannot decode the correspondent.

Manual reference: TX-500 User Manual, pp. 17, 21–22, 29–30

Memory / PC

Distinguish recorded and text messages

Access path
Hold CWM1/2 to record; hold CWS1/2 for text
Options or range
Short press plays; press again stops
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: Record or enter a short CQ, check the callsign and play once before using a beacon. Text playback follows the keyer-speed setting; prove the stop key while still testing.

Manual reference: TX-500 User Manual, pp. 17, 21–22, 29–30

System / power

Match the manual to the installed firmware

Access path
Lab599 > Downloads
Options or range
Model-specific manual and changelog
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: TX-500 decoder support first appeared as beta in v1.13.08; v1.26.06 reorganized menus. Match names, not an old item number, and use the correct model package instead of transferring firmware between TX-500 and MP.

CW599 RECOMMENDATIONS

Three operating starting points

These are original operator-oriented starting points. They are not factory presets and intentionally avoid claiming model-specific default values.

First contact

Check one change at a time.

  • Keying: Match the actual key and verify clean spacing
  • Transmit: Check the documented RF-off or dummy-load setup first
  • Receive: Use a comfortable tone and moderate volume

Difficult reception

Keep the wanted signal audible.

  • Tuning: Center the wanted note before narrowing
  • Filter: Compare changes at a similar audio level
  • Copying: Ask for a repeat when a callsign remains uncertain

Repeated calls

Leave a clear path back to receiving.

  • Sending: Verify any supported message and its stop action
  • Listening: Leave time for an answer
  • Station: Confirm frequency, power and transmit recovery

Questions and troubleshooting

Why does enabling TX not show the caller?

TX is your own text. Set decoder RX to ENABLE for received CW.

Why does my menu number differ?

Firmware reorganized menus. Match the model and the named setting in its current documentation.

Can I use the other model’s memory buttons?

No. TX-500 uses CWM/CWS labels in the checked manual; MP uses MAG/CWST. Follow the labels on your firmware.
