A five-step CW setup routine

Use this order as an operating checklist, not as a replacement for the radio manual. Controls and available options can vary by firmware and region.

01

Connect and select

Confirm the assembled band configuration and key wiring.

02

Check the test setup

Enable Practice and look for P beside the frequency.

03

Set rhythm and tone

Choose keyer mode and verify speed and clean spacing.

04

Tune one signal

Tune to the audio center, then enable received text if desired.

05

Send and listen

Check antenna and power, disable Practice and send a short call.

RECEIVE ASSISTANCE

CW decoding: enable, tune and recover

Received text, transmitted text and CW menu editing have independent switches. Tune the audio first; the decoder’s averaging controls are for difficult conditions, not a compulsory setup ritual.

01

Enable Rx

Open Decoder > Enable Rx and enable it.

02

Match the audio center

Use a compatible CW filter center on QMX; preserve the approximately 700 Hz hardware-filter alignment on QCX.

03

Inspect the lower line

Listen to one complete call and compare the lower-line text. Enable Tx alone cannot provide incoming text.

04

Adjust only if necessary

Keep baseline averaging values until tuning is correct. Change only one value and restore it if the text gets worse.

When decoding needs help

No text

Return to the receive-decode setting above, confirm a steady audible CW signal and retune before changing more parameters. Transmit echo alone does not confirm receive decoding.

Garbled text

Listen to one complete call and compare it with the display. Fading and irregular spacing can defeat the decoder; request a repeat and copy by ear instead of completing an uncertain callsign from guesses.

Another station takes over

Center the wanted signal first, then narrow the receive filter gradually. If the wanted tone disappears, widen the filter and tune again. Stop adjusting when a clear tone and stable text agree.

MODEL SETTINGS INDEX

CW settings, paths, and starting points

Search by setting or menu path. Manufacturer defaults and recommendations are labeled separately from CW599 advice; references identify the checked manual or software version.

Keyer

Choose straight or paddle operation

Access path
Keyer > Keyer mode
Options or range
Straight / Iambic A / Iambic B / Ultimatic
Factory value / operating start
Manual illustrated value (not independently confirmed as factory default): Straight.

CW599 note: Select the physical key you connected and test separate elements in Practice mode. Choose a familiar iambic response before adjusting weight or automatic spacing.

Manual reference: QCX Operating Manual 1.08/1.09, pp. 17–23

Keyer

Adjust keyer speed from the front panel

Access path
Tap Select > turn TUNE > tap Select
Options or range
Displayed WPM
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: Adjust while in Practice and listen to the character spacing. The new speed also affects stored-message playback; check a short message before transmitting.

Manual reference: QCX Operating Manual 1.08/1.09, pp. 7–9, 52

Keyer

Reverse paddle contacts in the menu

Access path
Keyer > Keyer swap
Options or range
ON / OFF
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: Use swap when the dot and dash directions are reversed. Test a single press on each side and an alternating sequence before storing any message.

Manual reference: QCX Operating Manual 1.08/1.09, pp. 17–23

Keyer

Use Practice to block RF

Access path
Keyer > Practice
Options or range
ON / OFF
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: OFF; CW599: ON for setup.

CW599 note: Enable Practice and confirm P beside the frequency. The keyer and text display still work, allowing you to test spacing without putting a practice message on the antenna.

Manual reference: QCX Operating Manual 1.08/1.09, pp. 17–23

Keyer

Keep weighting neutral while learning

Access path
Keyer > Keyer Weight
Options or range
050–950
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: 500.

CW599 note: 500 represents 50.0% dot duty cycle. Keep it while checking your spacing; weight changes element and gap durations together, so it is not a substitute for adjusting WPM.

Manual reference: QCX Operating Manual 1.08/1.09, pp. 17–23

Break-in

Choose full or delayed recovery

Access path
Keyer > Semi QSK
Options or range
OFF / ON
Factory value / operating start
Manual illustrated value (not independently confirmed as factory default): OFF.

CW599 note: OFF selects full QSK; ON holds receive for eight dot lengths. Compare listening comfort with your own keying before selecting faster recovery.

Manual reference: QCX Operating Manual 1.08/1.09, pp. 17–23

Receive

Keep filter and tone aligned

Access path
VFO > CW offset; Keyer > Sidetone frq
Options or range
Fixed analogue filter near 700 Hz
Factory value / operating start
Manual CW offset and sidetone defaults: 700 Hz.

CW599 note: Keep the sidetone and CW offset near the hardware filter center. Moving the audio reference far away can make a correctly tuned station seem weak because the analogue filter is fixed.

Manual reference: QCX Operating Manual 1.08/1.09, pp. 17–23

Receive

Enable received text separately

Access path
Decoder > Enable Rx
Options or range
ON / OFF
Factory value / operating start
CW599: explicitly enable receive decoding when you want received text.

CW599 note: Enable Rx controls incoming text on the lower line; Enable Tx controls your sending. If no text appears, confirm Rx first, then tune the signal before experimenting with averaging controls.

Manual reference: QCX Operating Manual 1.08/1.09, pp. 17–23

Receive

Avoid over-filtering the decoder timing

Access path
Decoder > Noise blnk. / Speed avg. / Ampl. Avg.
Options or range
Impulse rejection; speed and amplitude averaging
Factory value / operating start
Manual illustrated values (not independently confirmed as factory defaults): 10 / 07 / 60.

CW599 note: Change one parameter and compare the same signal. Excessive blanking can remove short dots, while slow averaging can miss the start of a new caller; return to the recorded baseline if readability worsens.

Manual reference: QCX Operating Manual 1.08/1.09, pp. 17–23

Memory / PC

Check message capacity and the stop action

Access path
Messages > Message 1–12 / Interval / Repeats
Options or range
Messages 1–4: 100 characters; 5–12: 50 characters
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: Edit with the encoder or enabled CW menu decoder. Repeats 0 means indefinite transmission, so begin with single playback in Practice. Press Exit or the key to cancel sending.

Manual reference: QCX Operating Manual 1.08/1.09, pp. 9–10, 14–15

CW599 RECOMMENDATIONS

Three operating starting points

These are original operator-oriented starting points. They are not factory presets and intentionally avoid claiming model-specific default values.

First contact

Check one change at a time.

  • Keying: Match the actual key and verify clean spacing
  • Transmit: Check the documented RF-off or dummy-load setup first
  • Receive: Use a comfortable tone and moderate volume

Difficult reception

Keep the wanted signal audible.

  • Tuning: Center the wanted note before narrowing
  • Filter: Compare changes at a similar audio level
  • Copying: Ask for a repeat when a callsign remains uncertain

Repeated calls

Leave a clear path back to receiving.

  • Sending: Verify any supported message and its stop action
  • Listening: Leave time for an answer
  • Station: Confirm frequency, power and transmit recovery

Questions and troubleshooting

Why is there no RF with normal keyer sound?

Practice blocks RF and shows P. Confirm the station before disabling it.

Can I copy QMX filter settings to QCX?

No. QMX has configurable DSP passbands; QCX uses an analogue CW filter with a fixed center.

Why does transmitted text work but received text fail?

Enable Tx and Enable Rx are separate. Confirm Rx, tune to the filter center and reduce adjacent interference before changing timing averages.
