A five-step CW setup routine

Use this order as an operating checklist, not as a replacement for the radio manual. Controls and available options can vary by firmware and region.

Connect and select your keyer type

Confirm the key or paddle is connected correctly, then set KEYER TYPE and dot/dash direction before calling.

Set CW pitch and speed

Use the FUNC controls for CW PITCH and CW SPEED. Start at a copying speed, not a target speed.

Start with semi break-in

Set CW BK-IN TYPE to SEMI and verify the station returns to receive cleanly between characters.

Shape the signal and receiver

Check CW WAVE SHAPE, APF width, and receive filtering one control at a time.

05

Add computer or memory keying last

Only enable PC KEYING or memories after manual keying works exactly as expected.

First CW contact

A calm setup for learning the radio.

  • Keying: Use the hardware mode that matches your key
  • Break-in: Start conservatively with semi break-in
  • Receive: Prioritize comfortable pitch and level

Weak signal listening

A patient workflow for signals close to noise.

  • Filter: Tighten gradually, while preserving your preferred tone
  • AGC / audio: Avoid changing several receive controls at once
  • Tuning: Use the radio display only as an aid; copy by ear

Faster exchanges

For operators who need quicker station turnaround.

  • Break-in: Only increase switching speed after a full station check
  • Keyer: Confirm paddle direction and weighting before calling
  • Station: Verify amplifier, relay and interface behavior first
