A five-step CW setup routine

Use this order as an operating checklist, not as a replacement for the radio manual. Controls and available options can vary by firmware and region.

01

Prepare the Field head

Connect the key to KEY and select CW-U. Leave BK-IN off for the initial check and select the keyer type that matches the hardware.

02

Set the sound and timing

Adjust MONI LEVEL, CW PITCH and CW SPEED. Test dots, dashes and spacing before packing the station or connecting external equipment.

03

Tune the wanted signal

Use your ear and the tuning indicator; ZIN is an aid, not proof of identity. Narrow the receiver only after confirming the desired note.

04

Use controlled break-in

Check SEMI and set a comfortable BK-DELAY. Listen before a short low-power call and confirm receive recovery before considering FULL.

05

Review stored calls

Choose TEXT or MESSAGE for each memory, audition it with BK-IN off, and check contest numbering before enabling on-air playback.

MODEL SETTINGS INDEX

CW settings, paths, and starting points

Search the model-specific CW controls below. Menu labels and ranges are drawn from official documentation; the notes are original CW599 operating guidance.

Keyer

KEYER TYPE

Access path
Hold FUNC > CW SETTING > KEYER > KEYER TYPE
Options or range
OFF / BUG / ELEKEY-A / ELEKEY-B / ELEKEY-Y / ACS
Factory value / operating start
Factory: ELEKEY-B

CW599 note: Use OFF for a straight key or an external keyer’s completed output. Test the release behaviour of A/B/Y in sidetone to match your habit. ACS enforces character spacing; it does not choose your word spacing.

Manual reference: Operating pp. 46–47; Advance p. 61

Keyer

KEYER DOT/DASH

Access path
Hold FUNC > CW SETTING > KEYER > KEYER DOT/DASH
Options or range
NOR / REV
Factory value / operating start
Factory: NOR

CW599 note: Use REV if the two paddle sides are reversed for your hand. Test the sides separately with BK-IN off. The operating manual notes that this reversal does not change BUG and OFF behaviour.

Manual reference: Operating p. 47; Advance p. 61

Keyer

CW SPEED

Access path
FUNC > CW SPEED; rotate FUNC
Options or range
4–60 WPM
Factory value / operating start
CW599: start at a comfortable speed

CW599 note: Choose a speed you can sustain, not merely the maximum the radio offers. Send a short test in sidetone and listen for clean character gaps before making a call.

Manual reference: Operating p. 47

Receive

MONI LEVEL

Access path
Hold FUNC > MONI LEVEL; rotate FUNC
Options or range
Adjustable monitor level
Factory value / operating start
CW599: comfortable headphone volume

CW599 note: Set the monitor level before practising, with BK-IN off. This is loudness, not CW pitch; recheck after changing headphones so a loud sidetone does not hide the received station.

Manual reference: Operating p. 46

Receive

CW PITCH

Access path
Hold FUNC > CW menu page > CW PITCH; rotate FUNC
Options or range
Receive tone and sidetone pitch adjustment
Factory value / operating start
CW599: choose a comfortable listening pitch

CW599 note: Choose the tone you can follow comfortably before using a narrow filter. Compare your sidetone with the received note; MONI LEVEL controls loudness separately. Retune the station if it no longer sits at the chosen reference tone.

Manual reference: Operating p. 23

Receive

CW SPOT and ZIN

Access path
Hold FUNC > CW SPOT / ZIN
Options or range
Reference tone / automatic zero-in
Factory value / operating start
CW599: verify by ear

CW599 note: Compare the wanted station with the reference tone before narrowing. ZIN adjusts tuning automatically, but a crowded passband can contain several stations; confirm the intended signal remains selected.

Manual reference: Operating p. 46

Keyer

CW WEIGHT

Access path
Hold FUNC > CW SETTING > KEYER > CW WEIGHT
Options or range
2.5–4.5
Factory value / operating start
Factory: 3.0

CW599 note: Keep the normal three-to-one dash ratio while learning. Changing weight cannot fix characters sent without adequate gaps; record and compare before adjusting.

Manual reference: Operating p. 47; Advance p. 61

Break-in

CW BK-IN TYPE

Access path
Hold FUNC > CW SETTING > MODE CW > CW BK-IN TYPE
Options or range
SEMI / FULL
Factory value / operating start
Factory: SEMI

CW599 note: SEMI holds transmit after key-up; FULL listens between elements. BK-IN must also be enabled for automatic transmit switching. Confirm the station’s external switching before choosing FULL.

Manual reference: Operating p. 46; Advance p. 59

Break-in

BK-DELAY

Access path
Hold FUNC > BK-DELAY; rotate FUNC
Options or range
Semi-break-in hang time
Factory value / operating start
CW599: allow clear receive recovery

CW599 note: Increase the hang time if switching interrupts your natural character rhythm; shorten it gradually if replies are missed. Verify by listening after key-up. It does not set the RF envelope shape.

Manual reference: Operating p. 47

Break-in

QSK DELAY TIME

Access path
Hold FUNC > CW SETTING > MODE CW > QSK DELAY TIME
Options or range
15 / 20 / 25 / 30 ms
Factory value / operating start
Factory: 15 ms

CW599 note: This delay is before the keying signal, distinct from receive hang time. The manual fixes it at 15 ms at 45 WPM or above regardless of the selected value; verify amplifier compatibility at your actual speed.

Manual reference: Advance p. 59

Receive

NAR WIDTH

Access path
Hold FUNC > CW SETTING > MODE CW > NAR WIDTH
Options or range
Discrete IF widths, 50–4000 Hz
Factory value / operating start
Factory: 250 Hz

CW599 note: This sets the width recalled by NAR in CW. A very narrow setting helps only when the note is centred; if copy deteriorates, widen the passband and retune before increasing audio gain.

Manual reference: Advance p. 58

Receive

APF WIDTH

Access path
Hold FUNC > OPERATION SETTING > RX DSP > APF WIDTH
Options or range
NARROW / MEDIUM / WIDE
Factory value / operating start
Factory: MEDIUM

CW599 note: The audio peak follows CW PITCH. Choose the width after tuning the station; compare intelligibility at similar volume. If a narrow peak makes the signal difficult to follow, return to MEDIUM or WIDE and check tuning.

Manual reference: Advance p. 67

Memory / PC

PC KEYING

Access path
Hold FUNC > CW SETTING > MODE CW > PC KEYING
Options or range
OFF / RTS / DTR
Factory value / operating start
Factory: OFF

CW599 note: Select the control line used by your software and verify it separately from RPTT SELECT. Test with RF inhibited; a working CAT connection alone does not prove the keying line is correct.

Manual reference: Advance pp. 58–59

Memory / PC

CW MEMORY 1–5

Access path
Hold FUNC > CW SETTING > KEYER > CW MEMORY 1–5
Options or range
TEXT / MESSAGE
Factory value / operating start
Factory: TEXT

CW599 note: TEXT uses entered characters; MESSAGE captures paddle entry. Open MESSAGE to record and audition with BK-IN off. Review your callsign and spacing before enabling on-air playback.

Manual reference: Operating pp. 48–49; Advance p. 62

Memory / PC

CONTEST NUMBER

Access path
Hold FUNC > CW SETTING > KEYER > CONTEST NUMBER
Options or range
1–9999
Factory value / operating start
Factory: 1

CW599 note: A # in memory text inserts the contest number. Confirm it against your log before sending; DECnnnn on the memory screen corrects an extra increment. Use the contest’s required exchange.

Manual reference: Operating p. 50; Advance p. 62

CW599 RECOMMENDATIONS

Three operating starting points

These are original operator-oriented starting points. They are not factory presets and intentionally avoid claiming model-specific default values.

First CW contact

A calm setup for learning the radio.

  • Keying: Use the hardware mode that matches your key
  • Break-in: Start conservatively with semi break-in
  • Receive: Prioritize comfortable pitch and level

Weak signal listening

A patient workflow for signals close to noise.

  • Filter: Tighten gradually, while preserving your preferred tone
  • AGC / audio: Avoid changing several receive controls at once
  • Tuning: Use the radio display only as an aid; copy by ear

Faster exchanges

For operators who need quicker station turnaround.

  • Break-in: Only increase switching speed after a full station check
  • Keyer: Confirm paddle direction and weighting before calling
  • Station: Verify amplifier, relay and interface behavior first

Questions and troubleshooting

Does Optima need a different CW guide?

The common CW controls are covered here. The official US Optima package includes the SPA-1 amplifier; the Field head can operate separately. Check the actual package, supply, band and regional manual rather than treating every variant as a 100 W radio.

Why is the stored message spacing wrong?

MESSAGE records your paddle timing; poor spacing can be stored with it. Re-record slowly or use TEXT entry. Audition with BK-IN off before transmitting.

Why does USB control tune the radio but not send CW?

CAT frequency control, RPTT and PC KEYING are separate settings. Match the software’s COM port and control line, change one assignment at a time, and test with RF inhibited.
