CW599 ORIGINAL OPERATING WORKFLOW

TS-990SCW Operating Guide

Use the dedicated keying and pitch controls to establish a repeatable CW setup. Japan resumed TS-990S orders in September 2025, while the European product page marks it discontinued. Availability is regional; this guide uses the English operating manual rather than assuming every current unit has the same firmware.

A five-step CW setup routine

Use this order as an operating checklist, not as a replacement for the radio manual. Controls and available options can vary by firmware and region.

01

Connect and select

Select CW and set front/rear key jack behavior.

02

Check the test setup

Disable break-in and SEND; verify side tone with no RF.

03

Set rhythm and tone

Adjust key speed, pitch and menu 1-02 side-tone volume.

04

Tune one signal

Tune one wanted note and verify the receiver/transmit side.

05

Send and listen

Enable semi break-in, send one short call and listen before repeating.

MODEL SETTINGS INDEX

CW settings, paths, and starting points

Search by setting or menu path. Manufacturer defaults and recommendations are labeled separately from CW599 advice; references identify the checked manual or software version.

Memory / PC

Confirm the transmit band before calling

Access path
RX (S); TX (M) / TX (S); TF-SET
Options or range
Dual reception / simplex / split
Factory value / operating start
CW599: begin with main-band simplex; split only when requested.

CW599 note: RX (S) enables the second receiver; it does not by itself choose your transmit band. With reception on main, TX (S) selects sub-band transmit and lights SPLIT. Check both frequencies before keying; hold TF-SET to listen at the transmit frequency, then release it. TX (M) returns this setup to simplex.

Keyer

Set front and rear jack behavior

Access path
MENU > 5-00 / 5-01
Options or range
Paddle / Straight Key / Paddle (Bug Key Mode)
Factory value / operating start
Manual defaults: front Paddle; rear Straight Key.

CW599 note: Set the actual socket used; front and rear defaults differ. Test with break-in disabled. An external electronic keyer normally needs direct Straight Key input, not another automatic keyer stage.

Manual reference: TS-990S Instruction Manual, pp. 5-15–5-27

Keyer

Set keying speed before a call

Access path
KEY SPEED
Options or range
4–60 WPM
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: Turn the dedicated speed control while practicing a short callsign. Read the temporary speed display and keep your outgoing speed close to a caller you can comfortably copy.

Manual reference: TS-990S Instruction Manual, pp. 5-15–5-27

Receive

Set pitch separately from volume

Access path
CW PITCH; MENU > 1-02
Options or range
300–1100 Hz; volume Linked with Monitor Control / Off / 1–20
Factory value / operating start
Manual volume default: Linked with Monitor Control.

CW599 note: Choose a comfortable note, then use menu 1-02 for a fixed side-tone level or leave it linked to MONITOR. AF does not set sidetone/message playback volume. Check with a short no-RF practice after changing headphones.

Manual reference: TS-990S Instruction Manual, pp. 5-15–5-27

Break-in

Start with semi break-in

Access path
VOX/SEL; DELAY; FBK
Options or range
Semi / full break-in
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: Use VOX/SEL for semi break-in and DELAY for recovery time; FBK selects full break-in. Confirm the corresponding LED and return to reception after a short test. The two modes are mutually exclusive. CW599: start with semi until amplifier switching is confirmed.

Manual reference: TS-990S Instruction Manual, pp. 5-15–5-27

Keyer

Prove the practice state

Access path
CW; break-in and SEND off
Options or range
Sidetone with transmission disabled
Factory value / operating start
CW599: change only after the listening or keying check below.

CW599 note: Disable all transmit-enabling actions before practicing. Confirm no RF output while testing the key and memories; leave SEND untouched until the station is ready for an on-air check.

Manual reference: TS-990S Instruction Manual, pp. 5-15–5-27

Break-in

Retain an appropriate rise time

Access path
MENU > 5-14 > CW Rise Time
Options or range
1 / 2 / 4 / 6 ms
Factory value / operating start
Manual default: 6 ms.

CW599 note: Keep the documented value for initial setup. Evaluate any faster edge with the actual station and a reliable transmitted-signal report, rather than judging only the local monitor.

Manual reference: TS-990S Instruction Manual, pp. 5-15–5-27

Memory / PC

Select the entry method before recording

Access path
MENU > 5-10 > CW Message Entry; F2 KEYER
Options or range
Text String / Paddle; eight memories
Factory value / operating start
Manual entry-method default: Paddle.

CW599 note: Select CW on the transmit band and close the bandscope with SCP if KEYER is hidden. Choose the entry method, hold a channel to edit, and save a short call. Test with VOX and FBK indicators off and SEND off; F5 STOP ends playback. Recheck the serial after rehearsal.

Manual reference: TS-990S Instruction Manual, pp. 5-15–5-27

Memory / PC

Check the serial-number substitution

Access path
MENU > 5-11 / 5-13; KEYER
Options or range
001–9999; text memory token %N; count-up channel Off / 1–8
Factory value / operating start
Manual defaults: serial 001; count-up channel Off.

CW599 note: Set the starting serial in 5-11 and the count-up channel in 5-13. That channel increments the number after playback or transmission ends. Compare with your log after rehearsal or a failed exchange. In text-entry mode with count-up enabled, KEYER F6 [-1] lets you correct one unwanted increment.

CW599 RECOMMENDATIONS

Three operating starting points

These are original operator-oriented starting points. They are not factory presets and intentionally avoid claiming model-specific default values.

First contact

Check one change at a time.

  • Keying: Match the actual key and verify clean spacing
  • Transmit: Check the documented RF-off or dummy-load setup first
  • Receive: Use a comfortable tone and moderate volume

Difficult reception

Keep the wanted signal audible.

  • Tuning: Center the wanted note before narrowing
  • Filter: Compare changes at a similar audio level
  • Copying: Ask for a repeat when a callsign remains uncertain

Repeated calls

Leave a clear path back to receiving.

  • Sending: Verify any supported message and its stop action
  • Listening: Leave time for an answer
  • Station: Confirm frequency, power and transmit recovery

Questions and troubleshooting

Does it decode received CW?

The checked documentation does not provide a built-in received-CW text workflow for TS-990S. The checked manual’s DECODE screen covers FSK/PSK. Do not transfer TS-890S CW-decoder menus to this radio.

Why does AF not change the side tone?

Use menu 1-02 Sidetone Volume. Side tone and CW message playback are separate from receiver AF level.

Can I copy settings from the other Kenwood flagship?

No. Break-in controls and menu numbers differ. Use this model’s paths, especially CW Rise Time and CW Message Entry.
